- APPEARANCE -

Gnarly is a doppelganger of his conventional counterpart. He is an anthropomorphic echidna with red fur covering most of his body, a black nose over his peach-skin snout, a white crescent-shaped patch of fur on his chest, and purple eyes. He also has seven dreadlock-like spines on the sides and back of his head, and a medium-sized, three-curved tail. For attire, Gnarly wears a hat made of leaves, held together with string. His gloves are yellowish, with the typical spikes of his main counterpart's gloves made of plant thorns. His shoes are made of leaves. He has dark red tribal tattoos on his forehead, cheeks, legs, tail, around his eyes, and on his dreadlocks. He also has bracelets decorating his dreadlocks, as well as a wooden necklace around his neck.

- HISTORY -

- TV series - Past: Some time before Sonic's arrival in the Boscage Maze, Gnarly and the other Scavengers had been in conflict with Thorn Rose over dominance of the jungle floor and access to its resources. — First season: UWTTJ 276: Gnarly being a little paranoid about Sonic, from "Unwelcome to the Jungle". Gnarly was first seen being launched into the sky, only for Sonic to stumble upon him and his fellow Scavengers, whereupon they attacked Sonic thinking he was there to steal their supplies. Eventually, Sonic calmed down and explained his situation to the Scavengers, and Gnarly followed the others while Prim explained hers to Sonic. Soon, Gnarly got into a fight with Mangey and Hangry over the only berry they had to eat, with Sonic breaking up the fight and promising that he could get them more. Gnarly and the other Scavengers, along with Sonic, descended to the jungle floor to scavenge for supplies, while Sonic dealt with the monster. Eventually, the monster attacked, taking out Gnarly and the others one by one, causing Gnarly and his friends to retreat to the treetops. After a while, Gnarly and the others fell back down. After Sonic pointed out to Thorn the damage she caused to the jungle, she apologized to her friends. Gnarly and the others also apologized to her. The Scavengers finally reunited and were at peace again. —Second season: GnarlyFights: Gnarly fights to protect her home, from "Battle at the Boscage". When the Council attacks the Boscage Maze, Thorn asks her friends to help her fight. Gnarly is too scared and thinks the Council might be there to eat them. Thorn and Sonic go into the fight alone, while the others stay behind. Eventually, Gnarly and the others decide to go down into the jungle and help their friends, fighting off some Eggforcers. — Season Three: HSH 76 Gnarly has an idea, "Home Sick Home".

When Shatterspace begins to collapse, Gnarly heads to New Yoke. There, he helps the others ensure the safety of the citizens. When Sonic goes to the Grim to speak with Nine, Gnarly and his other friends arrive for help. They engage in a fierce battle against Nine's Grim robots. Gnarly follows the Rebels' orders and attempts to sneak to the top of Nine's tower with Prim and Hangry. At one point, Gnarly suggests using a time machine.

- PERSONALITY -

Gnarly possesses Knuckles' distrust of anything strange, having lost his common sense to the point of becoming completely paranoid. He immediately accuses Sonic of coming to steal supplies as soon as they meet, and even after they stop fighting him, he remains suspicious. He even distrusts the environment around him, accusing trees of talking and listening. He is also stubborn, as Prim has repeatedly tried to convince him otherwise, to no avail. Gnarly quickly launches into the attack, and the other Scavengers follow him into battle. When he agrees to follow Sonic's lead, they don't argue with him, demonstrating his natural leadership ability. However, he never seems to think before he acts.
