Dazai's story

Before joining the Detective Agency, Dazai was one of the five leaders of the Port Mafia and served as Ougai Mori's right-hand man. In the history of the mafia, he was the youngest to be given the honor of being one of the leaders, making him a living legend. In the years that followed, he primarily focused on leadership, bringing in about half of the mafia's total profits, causing current boss Mori Ougai to say, "Give him another 3-4 years, and I won't be surprised if he kills me and takes my place." Aside from leadership, Dazai was also infamous for his extremely brutal torture, once stating that "there was not a single prisoner who could withstand my interrogation." He also used brutal training methods on Akutagawa Ryunosuke.

The impetus for leaving the mafia was the death of his only close friend, Oda Sakunosuke, a low-ranking enforcer who was killed during a conflict between the Port Mafia and the Mimic organization, which was orchestrated by Mori Ogai in order to gain government permission for the Port Mafia to exist as an official organization. Distraught at the realization that Oda had been manipulated by Ogai all along to attack the enemy commander and die, Dazai takes his last words especially to heart: "Become someone who saves people. Both sides are equal, so become a good person. Protect the weak, take care of the disadvantaged. For you, there is no difference between evil and justice... but it will be better this way..." - after which Oda dies, and Dazai decides to leave the mafia.

According to Akutagawa, he suddenly interrupted one of his missions and deserted. Later, Dazai tracked down a man named Taneda, the head of the Special Department for Gifted People of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, and asked him to find a place where he could help people. Taneda responded by asking if Dazai would like to join the Detective Agency, but on the condition that he disappear for two years to clear his past. It is unknown what he did during this time, only that before joining the agency, he was unemployed and was a frequent visitor to bars, where he would get drunk for no reason.

Osamu Dazai had parents. His father, Tsushima Gen'uemon, was one of the richest and most influential landowners in the area, and an active political figure. His mother, Tane, was often ill, and the children, of whom there were eleven (Shuji was the tenth), were raised by nannies and numerous dependent aunts.

Dazai's brothers and sisters

Older brother: Bunji, head of the Tsushima family. Brothers: the younger - Reiji and the elder - Keiji, with whom Dazai was especially close. In 1929-1930, these two brothers died one after the other. Osamu Dazai has an older sister, Kyoko Mejiro.
