Aside from their basic duties as "crew" within the planetary form of Primus and their duty to battle Unicron, each was given another charge. Three of the four known members of the Thirteen were assigned to protect specific aspects of the multiverse. Most likely, each of the other Thirteen originally had an assigned role as guardian to some aspect of reality as well. Vector Prime was tasked with overseeing the space/time continuum. The Fallen was tasked with overseeing the process of multiversal entropy. While Nexus Maximus was the protector of the rarefied Energon. While not guardian of any specific aspect, Solus Prime was the armorer of the Thirteen and was responsible for the creation of all of the group's weapons and equipment.

history

According to Transformers lore, before the dawn of time, Order and Chaos existed within an extra-dimensional entity known as The One. In order to explore the nascent universe, it created the astral being known as Unicron and then subdivided him, creating his twin, Primus. Both brothers were multiversal singularities, unique across all realities, but as Unicron could only exist in one universe at a time, moving between them at will, Primus existed simultaneously in all realities at the same time. It is suggested, in effect, that the two brothers embody the basic concepts of reality - good and evil, order and chaos - and that their existence is necessary for the stability of the multiverse. As Unicron and Primus ventured across the cosmos, it became apparent to Primus that Unicron was a corrupt being, and he was then confronted with the threat his brother posed. In combat, Primus was no match for Unicron. In cunning, however, he proved superior to his brother as he shifted the battlefield to the astral plane, then back to the physical world. In this way Primus sacrificed most of his strength to manifest their essences within metallic planetoids, leaving them both trapped. It was with this act of sacrifice that Primus hoped to contain this evil force forever. Sadly, over time, Unicron learned to physically fashion his prison into a giant metallic planet, and Primus followed suit, becoming the mechanical world of Cybertron. When Unicron later learned to transform his planetary form even further, into a gigantic robot form, Primus could as well, but he adapted the idea and created the Thirteen, a group of robotic beings who possessed the ability to shape-shift, like Unicron. The war between Unicron and Primus came to an apparent end during a climactic battle in which one of the Thirteen, Megatronus Prime, who would be known from then on as The Fallen, was defeated.
