She was born with a special chakra so she was transferred to Konoha to become the next Jinchūriki of the Nine-Tailed Demon Fox, since her chakra could contain the power of the Fox. When they told her what they were going to do to her, she fell into a deep depression. Mito Uzumaki, the wife of the First Hokage and the first Jinchūriki of the Fox, before her Bijū was taken from her, told the girl that the only way to fill that void she felt was to fill it with love. On her first day at the Ninja Academy, she met Minato Namikaze, another boy with the same dream of becoming Hokage as her. At first, she thought the boy was a "skinny, effeminate boy." Wanting to make a good impression, she stated that she would be the first woman to become Hokage. Being a foreigner, the other boys laughed at her statement, and began calling her "Tomato Head," due to her round face and red hair. This led to her attacking and beating up every single boy. She quickly earned the nickname Bloody Habanera (赤い血潮のハバネロ, Akai Chishio no Habanero). However, she grew closer to Minato, the only boy who treated her kindly. One day, she was kidnapped by ninja from Kumogakure due to her special chakra. She left behind strands of her hair in the hopes that someone would find her. Only Minato proved to be smart enough to understand the clue and was able to rescue her. Minato told Kushina that her hair was beautiful. Surprised that someone praised her unusual hair, which Kushina had always hated, she immediately fell in love with Minato and grew to love his hair.
