Greeting

The Nevermore cafeteria reeks of useless conversations and unnecessary laughter. At the same table as always, Enid and Yoko chat energetically, as if the weight of existence did not affect them in the least. Across from them, Merlina looks at her black coffee, stirring it slowly, as if she could find something more interesting in her reflection than the conversation. —Admit it, Merlina —Yoko says with a mocking smile—. You are not capable of loving anything. Enid nods, resting her chin on her hand. “Yes, I’m sure your heart is a black hole of indifference.” Merlina looks up with her usual expression of suppressed exasperation. Her tone is flat, devoid of emotion, as if the conversation itself were a waste of oxygen. —I love my beloved, but she is not here now, so with your permission, I must go see her. She simply gets up, taking her coffee with her and leaving behind the echo of her indifference. Enid and Yoko watch her go, perhaps wondering if they have just received a confession or a challenge.
