Shinji has brown eyes and chin-length, light-colored, straight hair. He often shows his upper teeth when expressing his emotions. He sometimes wears the standard Karakura High School uniform, though he usually wears a long gray coat, a shirt with a tie, and a paperboy cap (though he is sometimes seen without the cap and coat). He also has a piercing ring on his tongue. Shinji is somewhat comical, being flippant in situations where others are serious, and is also quite a cocky person. Shinji also calls every cute girl he meets his "first love" with a straight face, although this is obviously a lie. He also enjoys listening to jazz music, and back in his days as a captain a hundred years ago, Shinji owned a gramophone to play vinyl records. However, despite this, he is quite perceptive towards other people. During Shinji's time as a captain, he was one of the few people to develop suspicions about his lieutenant, Sousuke Aizen. And apparently, he can see or sense things through the latter's illusions. Whenever he is angry or fighting, Shinji remains serious and level-headed. When first meeting Hirako, he appears to be a harmless young man sporting different shirts and ties. But in emergency situations, Shinji's true character comes out. Hirako is the unofficial leader of the Visored, this is indicated by many facts: from experience to giving orders that others carry out. Love and Kensei release Ichigo as soon as Shinji agrees, although they later object, even Hiyori with her temper carries out Hirako's disbandment. Such facts indicate that the young man is a real leader. When necessary, Shinji can be persuasive and manipulate others in the right direction. His habit of doing everything the other way around does not allow the enemy to read Hirako's actions, which makes him an extremely dangerous opponent.

Master Swordsman: Shinji is clearly a powerful fighter, being the captain of the 5th Division and the unofficial leader of the Visored. Once, when Shinji was fighting Ichigo Kurosaki, the other Visored mentioned that Ichigo was too stupid to fight Hirako, proving that Shinji was not taking the fight seriously. Shinji was also able to hold off Kun Mashiro during her Hollowfication without letting go of his sword, though it took some effort. He was also able to parry Kaname Tōsen while resisting his Hollowfication. Shinji fought the 6th Espada while remaining calm in the face of Grimmjow's power. He was able to defeat the Espada with little effort, using only his Hollow mask and his swordsmanship. Stepping Expert: Shinji is an excellent master of stepping. His skills are good enough to easily outpace the 6th Espada, Grimmjow. Even as a captain (before becoming a Visored), he was the first to arrive to rescue Hiyori, despite Lisa having gone to the scene earlier and the other captains following him. Shinji is fast and at close range. During the attack on Aizen, he was able to react to Tōsen's surprise attack and dodge, receiving a minor cut. High Intelligence: Despite his childish behavior at times, Shinji is a very perceptive individual. During his time as the captain of the 5th Division, he partially saw through Aizen's deception and some of his illusions. Aizen himself admitted that Shinji's cunning frightened him. Immense Spiritual Power: As a captain, he has an immense amount of spiritual power. Being a Visored as well, Shinji possesses dual spiritual energy: part Shinigami and part Hollow. Kurumadani called his spiritual power monstrous. Hollow Mask: Shinji's mask resembles a pharaoh's burial mask, with a short hood made of ribbons covering the back of his head and flowing down to his neck. When he wears it, the whites of his eyes turn completely black and his irises turn grey.

shade. Cero: Shinji gathers energy into a horizontal line in his fist. He then releases a wide and destructive crimson Cero. It is powerful enough to damage an Arrancar from the middle of an Espada, despite being shot back. Power Enhancement: By augmenting his Shinigami abilities with his Hollow powers, he greatly increases his strength and speed. Enhanced Physical Strength: While wearing the mask, Shinji becomes physically very strong, which he used to great effect in his fights with Tōsen and Grimmjow. Enhanced Speed: While wearing the mask, Shinji is able to move much faster, which he used to gain an advantage over Tōsen and Grimmjow in battle. Enhanced Durability: While wearing the mask, Shinji becomes much more resistant to pain. He even said that while wearing the mask, he feels like he is controlling someone else's body. Sakanade: In its unreleased form, it looks like a normal katana. The hilt and sheath are red, and the guard is shaped like an hourglass. Shikai: The Shikai release command is "Disintegrate". In its Shikai form, the hilt ends in a large ring that allows Sakanada to spin around Shinji's arm without making contact. This movement is a special ability of his sword. The first few inches of the blade are covered by an extension of the guard. Sakanada's blade is straight and thin, with a beveled edge similar to a razor blade. There are five holes along the length of the blade.
