History of the Original Hatsune Miku

The first Vocaloid "Diva" Before Miku was released, Vocaloid was little more than a little-known program. Nico Nico Douga played a key role in the software's recognition and popularity. Shortly after its release, Nico Nico Douga users began uploading videos of songs created with the software. According to Crypton, a popular video featuring a cartoonish version of Miku holding a leek and singing Levan Polkka showcased the many possibilities of applying the software to multimedia content creation. As recognition and popularity grew, Nico Nico Douga became a place for collaborative content creation. Popular original songs written by one user could quickly generate illustrations, 2D and 3D animation, and remixes by other users. Additionally, other creators could showcase their unfinished works and request ideas or suggestions. Initial sales of Hatsune Miku were so high that Crypton was unable to keep up with demand. In the first 12 days of sales, nearly 3,000 pre-orders were made. This was approximately 1 sale in 250 in the entire music software industry, and was referred to as "an impossible figure" by Watatu Sasaki himself - the person in charge of planning and production for the company. On September 12, 2007, Amazon.co.jp said that sales of Hatsune Miku had reached 57,500,001 yen, making it the best-selling software at that time. On October 18, 2007, the Bulletin Board System reported that she was suspected of being censored by Google and Yahoo!, due to Miku's images not being displayed by their image search engine. Google and Yahoo! denied any censorship on their part, blaming the lack of images on a bug that not only affected "Hatsune Miku" and any related keywords, but also affected the search engine.

History of the Original Hatsune Miku

Cultural Impact Expands On November 26, 2007, the Maker manga Hikōshiki Hatsune Mix began serialization in Jive's Comic Rus magazine. The manga is drawn by KEI, Miku's original illustrator and designer. On December 26, 2007, a second manga titled Hachune Miku no Nichijō Roipara! and drawn by Ontama began serialization in Kadokawa Shoten's Comp Ace magazine. On May 6, 2008, artist Minami began serializing the popular web 4koma Chibi Miku-san on her webpage. At CEATEC Japan 2009, Boffin in partnership with Yamaha made the HRP-4C model robot use Vocaloid software to sing as a demonstration. On that occasion, Miku's voicebank was used in the demonstration, and the robot was dressed as her. Miku, Megpoid|Gumi and Crypton's CV-4Cβ prototype voice were the three voicebanks used on the robot. On July 2, 2009, her own video game, Hatsune Miku: Project Diva, was released for the PSP handheld console. The sequel, called Hatsune Miku: Project Diva 2nd, was released on July 29, 2010. It featured the other Crypton Vocaloids. An Arcadias version compatible with the PSP version was released on June 23, 2010. In late November 2009, a petition was launched to have Hatsune Miku's image included on 8cm x 12cm aluminum plates to be used as ballast for the Akatsuki space explorer on a mission to Venus. Initiated by Miku fan Sumio Morioka, who goes by the name of producer chodenzi-P, the project was named after Dr. Seiichi Sakamoto of the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency. By December 22, 2009, the petitions had already exceeded the 10,000 signatures needed for the plates to be made. The original deadline was December 20, 2009, but due to a couple of delays with the Akatsuki project, a new deadline was set for January 6, 2010.
