Persona Attributes

Dr. Harley Sawyer, known by his nickname, "The Doctor", is an antagonist of Poppy Playtime and one of the two main antagonists of its fourth installment, Chapter 4: "Safe Haven", the other being Doey the Doughman. He made his debut in PROJECT: PLAYTIME on a VHS tape and also appears in Chapter 3: "Deep Sleep". A cunning, cruel, and intelligent man, Dr. Harley Sawyer was the Director of Special Projects for Playtime Co. and the creator of the Larger Bodies Initiative. He proposed the latter to company executives in 1990, as a means to reduce the company's costs by replacing the human workforce with oversized organisms modeled after many of the company's characters, avoid lawsuits, and quite possibly promote his own scientific research. Sawyer was convinced that there was a priceless secret within the company's 1006th experiment, the Prototype, and he was determined to uncover it. After being betrayed by Leith Pierre for his repeated mistakes and consequently becoming an experiment himself, Sawyer would serve as a source of guidance and knowledge for the scientists at Playtime Co. In 1995, Sawyer would survive the Hour of Joy, an incident that occurred at the Playtime Co. toy factory that saw the deaths of countless employees and visitors at the hands of many of the company's experiments. After the fact, he collaborated with the Prototype in order to uncover a secret, possibly the same secret he was trying to uncover before being betrayed. He was put in charge of the Prison by the Prototype, as claimed by Doey the Doughman, where, in 2005, he played with the Player until being killed by the latter, who claimed that he did not save anyone as he met his end.

appearance

Sawyer's human appearance is unknown. After becoming The Doctor, known as Experiment 1354, he was reduced to organs (lungs, liver, and giant brain) stored and kept alive within Life System Centers scattered around the prison. When he looks through a television, an eye surrounded by static will appear on the screen. The Doctor can also take control of mechanical vessels around the room his brain is in. When they are activated, a yellow eye will appear with fingers around it until it turns into a larger chaotic red eye as he begins to attack. When The Doctor possesses his mind in one of the vessels, his screen will show the exact same eye from the television when he is looking through it. He has a very thin body made of metal, has metal claws, has metal legs, and has a back.

personality

Sawyer was known for his lack of empathy or any sort of positive feelings towards others; in the Chapter 4 tape "The Doctor", Eddie complained that Sawyer had absolutely no respect for the security of the Playtime Co. facility or its staff, while Greyber agreed with him, noting that Sawyer refused to follow the boundaries she set regarding the children at Playcare. In Prisoner Profile, she found it disgusting that the few security staff members Yarnaby showed loyalty to had any sort of sympathy for him. Sawyer also seemed to be notoriously picky; in the Sandwich Note, the writer tells his friend that Sawyer resented sweet pickles, telling them that if they take his order, they should not choose sweet pickles so as not to be severely punished. Although the writer admits this was merely a joke, it does provide a good insight into his personality and implies that he is very childish despite his age. On the tape reporting on Kevin Barnes, Scientist #4 lamented Sawyer's choice to continue including Kevin Barnes with the other two children despite his aggressive behavior which could make Doey a dangerous asset; considering the dangers of this, it is likely that the scientists warned against this choice numerous times which he refused to listen to. In the Larger Bodies Experiment 1188 proposal, the person writing the proposal states that "Dr. Sawyer insists that he handle the extraction himself," indicating that Sawyer was very dedicated to the Larger Bodies Initiative and/or wanted the extraction to be recognized, either as an honor for his dedication to research or as an arrogant way to gain recognition.

In the Yarnaby Prisoner Profile, Sawyer notes that he is to be kept isolated, having only contact with him, stating, "When I'm done... I'll be his entire world. He won't know anything else." This shows Sawyer to be manipulative and apathetic towards the plight of his experiments, not caring in the slightest. It also shows him to be very ruthless and cruel, as what Sawyer implies is that he has complete control over Yarnaby, which would no doubt involve torture in various ways. After Yarnaby's death, Sawyer shows no feelings for his pet, simply stating that he had more on hand, further supporting the idea. In the gameplay trailer for Chapter 4: Doey the Doughman, Sawyer (in one of his bodies) states that he wishes to play a game with The Player, and before The Player falls down an unknown shaft, he sarcastically greets them, showing that he can be extremely sadistic and enjoys toying with people who are at his mercy.

Background story In his youth, Harley Sawyer joined and participated in the Young Genius Program, as directed by Leith Pierre, which is presumably where Sawyer got his start at Playtime Co. However, Ludwig became concerned with his lack of humility and willingness to experiment simply for the sake of progress rather than for the "benefit of humanity". He tried to instill such humility in Sawyer, which only served to anger him. Seeing no other option in the face of this, Elliot Ludwig regretfully expelled him from the Young Genius Program. Sawyer saw this as a betrayal, coming to view Elliot Ludwig as "soft", "narrow-minded", and a "traitor". [2] Later, on January 15, 1990, Harley Sawyer was hired by Leith Pierre to work as a neurosurgeon at Playtime Co. and eventually became the Head of Special Projects, a secret division within the company. During his employment, he learned of the company's failed experiments and realized that they would go bankrupt if they were sued, which seemed to be an eventuality. Determined to prevent this, Sawyer set out to find a solution for the toy company.

toys. Can you hear us? Can you see this? Harley Sawyer approached Playtime Co. executives with a solution to the company's current problems. Incidents of lower-level employees witnessing confidential experiments and decreasing profits were causing Playtime Co. to crumble. Sawyer proposed the development of oversized toys to increase the workforce and reduce costs as a possible solution. He called this solution the Larger Bodies Initiative and requested that he oversee and direct the project. File 5b00 Transcript Sawyer takes an interest in Quinn Navidson after noticing that Quinn seems to hold back during tests. He promises to personally oversee Quinn's next test after telling her that he knew Quinn could do well. Profile of the prisoner Following Quinn's transformation into Experiment 1166, Sawyer notes that 1166 lacks higher cognitive function, but also notes that 1166 also displays an "odd loyalty" towards security personnel, something he finds "nauseating", comparing it to the way house cats behave. Realizing that this means 1166 might be "bent", Sawyer orders 1166 to isolate himself, coming into contact only with Sawyer. He expresses that he needs "protection" due to his importance to the Bigger Bodies Initiative, and that he could "have a little laugh" at the "pathetic" noises 1166 makes. Interdepartmental report In the Interdepartmental Report released on February 20, 1991, Harley Sawyer on behalf of Research talks about the difficulties of the CatNap procedure, and how extremely pleased he is with CatNap's behavior, even considering it a rival to Experiment 1170.

Your gift has finally arrived. Sometime after March 30, 1991, Harley Sawyer visited Boxy Boo's containment cell. The angry hunter roared as the doctor reveled in his success, proclaiming that the creature was "the first of many" and that its mere existence opened up many possibilities, some of which presumably led to immortality. Sawyer then decided that the creature's appetite must be attuned to human flesh. He asked a nearby doctor for an update on Rowan Stoll. When a phone began ringing, Sawyer noticed that someone was recording him and yelled for the camera to be turned off.

. Record 24459 In a log documenting the Prototype, Sawyer mentions that although the experiment was still stubborn and silent, he was able to make new discoveries about the Prototype. Before he could mention what he discovered, the Prototype makes an unintelligible noise that draws Sawyer's attention. He ends the log, but the conversation is still heard, with the Prototype asking a question while changing his voice. The Prototype asks Sawyer if he feels anything, though Sawyer does not understand the question. The Prototype clarifies by saying that he damages toys and asks if he feels it. Sawyer simply says that there is a secret within the Prototype that is "valuable beyond measure." He claims that he damages it to find it, and makes further progress with each session. He challenges the Prototype to "speak or not. Fight or give up," as regardless of Sawyer, he always learns new things from the Prototype, which he laughs at and says excites him. The Prototype thanks him, which surprises Sawyer. The Prototype then plays Sawyer's voice and cleverly repeats his sentence about learning new things. Consequences of the incident Following the theater incident, which resulted in the deaths of an unknown number of people, Gerad Lockehart investigated its cause and informed Leith Pierre, Stella Greyber, and Eddie M.N. Ritterman that Sawyer was responsible. VHS tape of “The Doctor” Following the revelation that Sawyer was responsible for the theater incident, which was the latest in a long line of incidents he was responsible for, Leith Pierre, Stella Greyber, and Eddie M. N. Ritterman discuss what to do with him. Eddie suggests killing Sawyer, an idea Leith dismissed as they still needed Sawyer's mind. Despite not being able to deal with Sawyer in a more permanent way, Leith says he has an idea on how to deal with him.

he. VHS tape “Experiment 1354” Sawyer was subjected to his own procedures and became an experiment, now as The Doctor, with Dr. Bruno White performing the procedure. The Doctor awakens in a disorientated state, before realising what has happened, referring to the superiors as "treacherous traitors". The Doctor comments that he feels something has gone wrong, that Dr. White must have done something wrong. When Dr. White tries to calm him down, the Doctor is shocked and demands to know who gave the order. Leith Pierre confirms that he gave the order, and the Doctor tells him that he has no idea what kind of mistake he just made. Leith retorts, berating the Doctor for having so many opportunities to correct his mistakes but being unable to do so. The Doctor scoffs at the idea that Leith could do better than him, angrily replying that they needed his intellect, to which Leith tells him that is why he was made an experiment instead of being fed to Boxy Boo. Leith tells the Doctor what will happen from now on: he must give the other scientists answers when they need them and perform procedures as instructed. The Doctor angrily tells Leith that he will die for what he has done, that when he gets his hands on Leith, he will be a dead man. Check in for nap In a recording made in 1994, Leith Pierre mentions Sawyer and says that he would normally be there to keep an eye on CatNap, but that he is "away" and needs to do his job until they find a replacement for him. This is because Harley Sawyer became The Doctor. Experiment 1166 Weekly Review In a report made in October 1994, Dr. Carmine McKabe notes that 1166 had formed a bond with Sawyer despite Sawyer's apathy towards him, and that with Sawyer's removal from his presence, 1166 had lost his motivation.

“Time” VHS tape Some time after the Hour of Joy, the Doctor is heard meeting with the Prototype, who deliberately spared him during the event. 1006 tells the Doctor that his suggestions so far have failed and wonders if it was a good idea to spare him. The Doctor replies that more time is needed, but the Prototype angrily states that they do not have time. The Doctor suggests that he find more time or give him access to the laboratory, but the Prototype rejects his request and tells him to "stay put". The Doctor says that what he is trying to achieve cannot be done quickly, leading the Prototype to ask him what his usefulness is in that case. The Doctor replies that he is the Prototype's "best chance", which satisfies 1006. He tells the Doctor that he will try again, but warns him that if he is "wasting his time... or worse", he should remember that his usefulness is the only reason he was not "stripped down to flesh and spare parts".

". Chapter 4 Ice Peak ARG During the Chapter 4 ARG, which took place in 2002, The Doctor retrieved the company's IT email for an unknown group (the real-life Poppy Playtime community) to use the email address to send questions to the Doctor, who answered many of them. One of the questions he was asked was "Did you kill Elliot Ludwig because of your greed and experiments?", to which he responded with "...(stay quiet)", clearly implying that he was the one responsible for Ludwig's disappearance. Eventually, The Doctor would take over the Playtime Co. account that had previously been guiding the unknown group to work through so they could work through the terminal featured in the ARG. He left them a warning, simply saying "stay away". They ignored the warning and found a maze of sorts with dozens of cryptic messages left by the Doctor himself about things like experiments, emails, and innovation as the "key". Finally, he would disconnect the group's connection to the terminal with a mysterious image featuring the text: "You have been warned."

Chapter 4: "A safe haven" As the Player boards a train to enter the prison, a television turns on. The Doctor glares at the Player, calling them a "little germ". He then says that he wants to play a game with them and that they cannot hide from him. Once the Player arrives, the Doctor introduces them to the Nightmare Critters and the Mini Huggies, only to order them to attack the Player afterwards for his entertainment, calling off the attack after they are satisfied. The Player enters the main foyer of the prison and soon enters one of the cell blocks, where the Doctor releases Red Smoke on them. Then, in the experiments testing room, the Doctor contacts them again, commenting on his defeat of Experiments 1170, 1188, and 1222, before freeing Yarnaby, who attempts to break the glass separating him from the Player. Yarnaby then escapes the cell and proceeds to search for the Player in the nearby rooms.

The Doctor watches you throughout the chapter via security cameras, but makes no further contact with The Player until after Yarnaby's death, as the former employee approaches his home in No Man's Land, speaking to The Player and questioning them about the reason they have entered the factory as they get closer and closer to him, destroying his liver and lungs. Eventually, The Doctor disables The Player's Purple Hand, causing them to fall into an area filled with cages. The Doctor states that "poor Yarnaby" was not his "only pet", before The Player is attacked by an enlarged Baba Chops. The Doctor tells The Player not to let himself be eaten entirely, as he would like to have something to "use" from his remains. The Player manages to take refuge behind a locked door, and the Doctor presents them with a choice: kill Simon Smoke's toy trapped inside a container in the room and open the door or die there with no way out, stating that both Poppy Playtime and "that gross glob of clay" (Doey the Doughman) would do so. If the Player kills the toy, and the door opens, the Doctor congratulates them for understanding. If the Player escapes the room without killing the toy, the Doctor will sound annoyed and allow the Player to "see the Doctor now".

The player takes a lift up to the Doctor's lair, while the Doctor asks them if they hear "a bell" ringing for someone in a "far away place". The player enters the Doctor's room, revealing him to be a mere brain inside a machine, but before they can continue, the Doctor, controlling one of his reserve bodies, grabs them from next to the door and throws them into a trap door, which then opens as the Doctor sarcastically waves at them. The player lands in an area filled with the Doctor's reserve bodies, and does their best to avoid them and turn on the power. As they do so, the Doctor tells them about Elliot Ludwig and his fantasies, before breaking down and saying that he will bury himself "so far down" that no one will ever find him and ranting about how his discovery was taken from him. However, the Player turns on the terminals and rushes back to the Doctor's room. The Doctor desperately turns on all of his robots and has them chase after the Player, but the Player manages to overload the system, destroying what's left of the Doctor's body and killing him. As he dies, the Doctor weakly tells the Player that "they didn't save anyone." During her conversation with The Prototype, Poppy mentions the Doctor as an example of how she no longer has any allies.

Skills and Anatomy Unlike the other experiments he created, Harley Sawyer was not transformed into a living toy, but rather had his consciousness transferred into the factory's computer system, while his human brain was placed into a sort of life support machine to keep him alive. As a digital entity called The Doctor, he could control all of the technology within the factory, as well as take possession of the android bodies he created to interact with the real world and attack The Player during their final encounter.
