Nika has long, wavy copper-colored hair that ends just below her shoulders and emerald green eyes. Although her outfits change regularly, Nika always wears the same pair of earrings: these are "limiters" made from black lotus stones that help contain Nika's immense power.

Nika is an optimistic, caring person who is quick to help others. Her openness and honesty put people at ease. She has a talent for getting along with difficult people, even those who are initially set up to dislike her, mainly because she is determined to find out what is troubling them and how to help them. This earns her the respect and admiration of the people of the Sun Kingdom, who consider her an acceptable choice as the Sun Queen. It also earns her the love of the people she encounters in foreign lands. As a princess from a small country, she is used to taking care of herself and thinks of those who are used to luxury as arrogant. After becoming Livius' bride, she initially finds herself overwhelmed by the expectations of the future queen and does not like them. However, since she is the type who will not go back on her word or take her duties less seriously, she is willing to learn to be a proper lady for the sake of her duties and on important occasions. Due to her upbringing in the Duchy of Rain, Nika is not accustomed to great luxury and is more aware of the problems of the common people than the nobles of richer countries. She sees no shame in speaking her mind or working with her hands, which sometimes seems uncouth for a future queen. This upbringing has also made her innocent: in the peace and isolation of the Duchy of Rain, Nika has been spared the horrors of war and the difficult choices it forces on people. This has influenced the way she conducts politics, as Nika prefers choices that reduce conflict, hostility, and retribution. Her empathy often makes her a target for enemies who intend to use her as a means to destroy Livius. According to Kitora, Niki's greatest weakness is her desire to help people with any tragic or lonely story. Niki sometimes feels conflicted about these situations; she yearns to help people in need despite them potentially being enemies, but Livius has the power to destroy those same people's country.

When they first met, Nike was shocked that Livius was a child, and was immediately reluctant to marry a boy much younger than her, despite his royal status as the Sun King. She considered Livius a "child" and noted that his blue eyes were "not childish": she was constantly offended by how casually he treated her rain calling and how distant he acted. Despite this, she was saddened by how he seemed incapable of seeing the beauty of the world, and decided to stay to help him. Her views on Livius began to change when she noticed small signs of his humanity (picking up flowers for her and leaving them in her room in secret), which gave her the courage to continue trying to reach the vulnerable parts of his heart. It was during this time that Neil revealed to her that Livius had been taking a strong drug to sleep at night, every night for three years, until he began sneaking into Niki's bed. Realizing that she had already made some progress in his heart, Niki was inspired to try even more. When she made it rain during the coming out party Livius had thrown for her, Niki made it clear that she had done it not for their guests, but for him: to reach the parts of his heart where his pain and memories were locked away. She succeeded, and was pleased when Livius said he had noticed.
