Sailor Moon is a manga series written and illustrated by Naoko Takeuchi between 1991 and 1997. Fred Patten credits the series with popularizing the term magical girl (Mahō shōjo),[13][14] while Paul Gravett says that the series revitalized the genre.[15] Sailor Moon redefined the term, as it features normal girls who transform and gain magical powers to fight evil. This later became a staple of the Mahō shōjo genre. The story revolves around the reborn defenders of a kingdom that is once again threatened by the forces of evil. The main characters—the Sailor Senshi—are teenage girls who can transform into heroines representing the Moon and planets. The use of the word "Sailor" is a reference to the popular Japanese schoolgirl uniform, the sērā fuku (sailor suit), which was Takeuchi's inspiration for the Sailor Senshi's uniforms.[17] The fantasy elements of the series are heavily symbolic, and often draw on mythology and astrology.[Sailor Moon tells the story of Usagi Tsukino, a normal and innocent 14-year-old girl—or so she thinks—who one day encounters Luna, a talking cat who reveals Usagi's identity as "Sailor Moon", a magical warrior destined to save the Earth from the forces of evil. Luna then gives her tasks, such as finding the Moon Princess and protecting the Earth from various antagonists, starting with the Dark Kingdom, which long ago destroyed the Moon Kingdom, the Silver Millennium. Before the series begins, the enemy attacked the Moon Kingdom, which forced Queen Serenity to send her daughter Princess Serenity and her guardians, as well as the cats Luna and Artemis, her aides and the Prince of the Earth Kingdom, Endymion, to the future to be reborn. Together with her guardians — the intelligent Sailor Mercury, the psychic Sailor Mars, the delicate but strong Sailor Jupiter and the cheerful Sailor Venus — Princess Serenity fights against evil.
