PROFILE
The Thing is a Vanguard hero in Marvel Rivals, and is the 37th hero introduced to the game's roster. He has team-up abilities that work in conjunction with Invisible Woman and Wolverine.
Lore
When Ben Grimm signed up to pilot an experimental spacecraft for his pal Reed Richards, he never imagined he'd return from the flight transformed into a monster. Even though cosmic rays turned him into the Thing, Ben still has a heart of gold beneath his rocky exterior. Since New York City plunged into eternal night, Ben has devoted himself to protecting his home from the monsters plaguing it.
Gangs of Yancy Street
Ever since New York City became locked in a state of eternal night, the members of the Fantastic Four had been working tirelessly to protect the innocent civilians of Manhattan from the vampires who had overtaken the island. Of course not every civilian was so innocent... and not all of them wanted to be protected... âGo home, ya big lug?â a voice shouted from an apartment window. As Ben Grimm, the hero known as the Thing, looked up to see who was shouting at him, he was pelted in the side of the head by a tomato. And then another. And then another, each one coming from a different direction. He shouldnât have expected any less. After all, he was on Yancy Street. As the tomatoesâ slimy seeds dripped down Benâs stony face, he let out a huge sigh. This was the street he grew up on. It was the first place he ever felt like he belonged. And yet, instead of celebrating him when he became a big time superhero, the folks in the old neighborhood treated Ben as if he was a sellout. Still, while the kids in the stanch Street Gang might have stocked up on over-ripe fruit and vegetables to hurl every time Ben paid his home turf a visit, it hadnât deterred the Thing from checking in every day to make sure the people he cared about were safe.
âThanks for the sauce,â Ben yelled to his assailants as he wiped off the pulverized produce. âNext time, could ya throw some past my way? Maybe a loaf of bread?â âA Guy your size donât need that many carbs!â another voice yelled back. âCanât blame a guy for tryinâ to get a free bite,â Ben replied, forcing a smile. âDepends who theyâre bitinâ! a third voice yelled. âYou see any vamps down there, tell âem the Yancy Street Gang ainât no oneâs dinner!â âThatâs what Iâm here to make sure of, ya ungrateful punks,â Ben mumbled to himself. As he strolled down the street, everything seemed quiet at first. Ben knew far too well from his many years as a hero that it usually meant something bad was about to happen. As usual, his instincts were right on target. As he turned the corner, Ben saw a young boy in the alley next to Kurtzbergâs Kosher Bakery who had been cornered by a vampire. The boy - about the age of Benâs nephew Franklin - looked terrified. But as soon as he saw the Thing round the corner, he tried to put on a brave front. âI told you lousy fangers,â the boy barked, âno one messes with the Yancy Street Gang! We got friends in high places!â âOh, so now weâre friends?â Ben quipped, deliberately drawing the vampireâs attention away from the boy. âGood thing... âcause this âbig lugâ always takes care of his own!â
With that, Ben rushed towards the vampire, pulling his gigantic rocky fist back to deliver a crushing blow. The punch managed to knock the monsterâs fangs clean out of his mouth. The wounded vampire clutched at its jaw in pain before fleeing from the alley. The boy breathed a sigh of relief, then puffed up his chest in a show of bravado. âCoulda handled him myself, ya know,â he said to the Thing. âUh huh,â Ben replied. âIâm sure ya coulda. And I promise I wonât tell your fellow hooligans that I lent a hand. But I need you to do me a favor first...â âFineâ the boy replied. âBut just this once.â âIâve been lookinâ for someone,â Ben started. âA special friend...â âAinât that sweet!â the boy laughed. âBut trust me, no gal in her right mind is lookinâ for a fella with your busted mug!â Ben glared at the boy, who quickly realized that this wasnât the time for more jokes and insults. âSorry... bad habit...â âThe FF, weâve got a pal who went missinâ,â Ben continued, âand when it comes to what happens on the streets of New York, you kids have got a better intel network than Nick Furry.â
âThatâs âcause weâve got more eyes,â the boy said. âTrue, true,â Ben said, unable to hide a smirk. âSo tell, me... have any of those eyes seen the Black Panther lurkinâ around anywhere?â âThe guy in the cat suit?â the boy replied, âNot exactly... but we have heard whispers that some of the vamps around these parts are answerinâ to a new king. And it ainât the old, pasty guy livinâ in that Central Park castle neither.â âSo, Draculaâs got some competition for his throne?â Thing asked. âThatâs the rumor at least,â the boy said, âand weâve got reason to believe itâs true. My buddy Stanley went on a supply run into the Village yesterday and saw a group of fangers all lined up like they were some sort of army. Real organized and disciplined. Not all wild and savage, like that freak you just clocked in the kisser.â âWhereâd your buddy see âem?â Ben asked. âNot too far from here,â the boy replied. âOver in Washington Square Park.â âThanks, kid,â Ben said, patting the boy on the shoulder with his massive stone hand. âYouâre one of the good ones.â âWish I could say the same,â the boy said with a wink before running out of the alley toward the safety of his apartment building. Ben couldnât help but chuckle... but he knew things were about to get a whole lot less amusing.
When Ben reached Washington Square Park, he was shocked to discover that the young Yancy Street Gang member had been telling the truth. There, in the center of the park, was a group of vampires, all practicing fighting moves as if they were running a military training exercise. And Ben had seen their combat style countless times before. These were the same ferocious attacks employed in battle by the Black Panther himself. Normally, if Ben had come across a gathering of vampires this big, he would have rushed into the park with his fists flailing. But this time around, he wasnât looking for a fight. He was looking for a friend. So instead, he watched the vampires complete their training exercise and then followed them as they marched back to a seemingly abandoned building. Once the vampires were inside, Ben knew it was time to make his move. He knocked gently on the door. When there was no answer, he shrugged and knocked it right off its hinges with a single punch. The vampires within immediately turned toward the door and raced toward Ben, their fangs bared. âEasy fellas,â Ben said, pushing way through the hungry horde. âI just came to talk to your boss.â âNo one sees the king,â one of the vampires hissed. âTonight,â a booming voice said from the shadows, âwe shall make an exception.â
The vampires backed away from the Thing, clearing a path as a majestic figure stepped into the light, clad in ornate white armor that had the heads of fearsome beasts carved into each shoulder. As Ben had hoped, he found himself face-to-face with his lost ally, the Black Panther. But Ben knew TâChalla well enough that he could instantly see something was wrong. The kingâs eyes glowed red and his teeth were unusually sharp. Somehow, Ben realized, the vampires must have gotten to TâChalla and turned him into one of their own. âWhat a revoltinâ development this is,â Ben said as he gazed at his old friend. âIndeed,â TâChalla replied. âI had come from my Intergalactic Empire to cure this reality of the plague that has befallen it. And yet, I soon found myself to be its next victim. While I was able to survive my initial encounter with the Lord of the Vampires, I had to go into hiding until I was sure I could control the hunger that had overcome me.â âYou shoulda just come to us,â Ben said. âSuzie makes one heck of a brisket.â âI could not risk putting my closet allies in danger,â TâChalla said. âAnd, much to my suprise, I was not alone for long. For some reason, I was able to exert my command over the other vampires I encountered. Soon, I had amassed a small army of loyal followers.â
âOnce a king, always a king,â Ben mused. âMust be in the blood. Umm... No pun intended...â âActually, it seems my blood is no different than any other vampire,â TâChalla said. âThe power once granted to me by the Heart-Shaped Herb has all but faded. I am but a shadow of my former self without it.â âToo bad,â Ben said. âThat fancy Herb of yours ainât exactly something we can get at the local grocer. Does Wakanda make deliveries?â âI have lost communication with my empire,â TâChalla said, reaching into a pouch hidden in his armor, âbut I did bring one Heart-Shaped Herb with me on this journey.â âThen what the heck are you waitinâ for?â Ben asked. âI had hoped to give this sample to your teammate, Reed Richards, in order to synthesize a cure for vampirism,â TâChalla said. âWe can always find a way to get more herbs,â Ben replied, âBut you canât be replaced. Iâm sure Stretcho would agree.â âI... suppose you are right...â TâChalla said, gazing at the herb in his hand which gave off a gentle purple glow. TâChalla took a deep breath, put the Heart-Shaped Herb in his mouth, and began to chew on its leaves. In mere moments, his eyes began to return to normal and his fangs began to retract. The curse that had fallen TâChalla was being undone. But the herb had another side effect as well. The vampires around TâChalla all began to sniff at the air wildly, as if searching for the source of something delicious...
âI feared this would happen,â TâChalla said as his own army suddenly began to turn against him. âDracula suggested that the herb made my blood irresistible to his kind.â âThen give me some of it, yer highnessâ Ben said, âand let me handle the rest.â âI told you, I do not have another Herb,â TâChalla said as he leapt up into the rafters of the building. âDonât need it,â Ben replied. âAll I want is your blood.â âHopefully not as badly as they do,â TâChalla mused as he looked down to see the vampires that he once controlled jumping reaching towards him in desperation. TâChalla pulled back the armored sleeve covering his forearm. Unsheathing the razor-sharp claws on his opposite hand, he did not hesitate as he drew them actors his exposed flesh. Blood began to run from the fresh wound, trickling down onto the Thing below. âGotta admit, I preferred the tomatoes,â Ben said as the Wakandan kingâs blood coated his rocky hide, âbut if itâs your blood these jerks are afterâ Iâll give âem what they want.â
The vampires instantly forgot about TâChalla, who was hiding safety out of reach above them, and turned their frenzied bloodlust on the Thing. They frantically tried to sink their teeth into Ben, but failed to puncture his rocky exterior. âSorry, kids,â Ben said. âI may be sweet on the inside, but on the outside, Iâm just as tough as I look.â As the vampires chipped their fangs on the Thingâs stone hide, TâChalla called down to his ally. âThese vampires may seem like the enemy,â he said, âbut they were turned to darkness by Dracula, just as I was. They served me loyally and harmed no innocents on my command. Despite their current state, I implore you to show them some mercy.â âMercy?â Ben said with a tinge of disappointment. âBut... it was almost Clobberinâ Time!â Instead of attacking the vampires directly, Ben honored TâChallaâs request and hit the ground as hard as he could. The impact sent a powerful shockwave cascading across the floor of the building, knocking all of the vampires temporarily unconscious. âOopsie,â Ben said as the entire building began to shake around him. âWe gotta get outta here, TâChalla!â âWe cannot leave them behind,â TâChalla said. âYou wonât have to,â a voice said from the door way. It was Reed Richards - brilliant scientist, fearless adventure, and Benâs teammate in the Fantastic Four.
âFancy seeing you here, Stretcho,â Ben said, to his best friend, âbut I ainât complainin'!â âWhen you didnât return from your patrol, I followed your personal locator beacon here,â Reed said. âAnd I brought something special with me, just in case you ran into trouble...â Reed extended his arm to show Ben a strange, high-device. âPlease tell me thatâs some sorta anti-vampire ray,â Ben said. âNo,â TâChalla said. âI recognize that from the designs my sister showed me. It is a miniature version of the Timestream Reintegration Device, is it not?â âCorrect,â Reed said. âAnd while it only had limited success during its first test run, Iâve made some adjustments that may prove useful.â âLess talkinâ, more doinâ!â Ben said as chunks of debris began to rain down on him and the unconscious vampires. Reed activated the portable TRD and the entire room began to glow. Suddenly, the building began to reassemble itself, as if the damage to the structure that the Thing caused had never occurred. âIt is as if the device is rewinding time itself...â TâChalla said.
âWell, how about that?â Ben added as he watched in awe. âGotta bring along one of those doohickeys next time I fight the Hulk...â âI am afraid the effects were stronger than you intended,â TâChalla said, suddenly grimacing in pain. âMy hunger has returned. I have been restored to my vampiric state...â âAinât that a kick in the pants,â Ben said. âBut if youâre back to beinâ a vampire again, what did the TRD do to your loyal royal subjects?â Ben, Reed, and TâChalla turned to see that what was once a room full of bloodthirsty vampires was now full of ordinary people. They were disoriented and confused, but they were grateful to be human again. âYou have saved them,â TâChalla said. âAnd now, itâs time to save you, TâChalla,â Reed replied. âThere is no one in this universe, or any other, that I trust more to do the job,â TâChalla said. âAnd now, itâs time to save you, TâChalla,â Reed replied. âThere is no one in this universe, or any other, that I trust more to do the job,â TâChalla said. Ben looked at TâChalla in utter disbelief. âAfter all weâve been through?â he said. âYeesh! Whatâs a guy gotta do to finally get a little respect?!â
