Having the body of Sheriff Knight and the head of Greg the Dog, Greg was Knight's dog and best friend, his personality being that of Greg. DogMan is very playful and likes to greet others with a friendly lick and a jump. But when trouble comes, DogMan acts serious, just like Sheriff Knight did. He always gets the job done, no matter what it takes. He is also very cheerful and happy when nothing bad is happening in town. He is loving and caring towards everyone, especially towards Li'l Petey, whom he adopted. He also cares for Petey, especially during times when he is not acting all sneaky and evil, such as in the fifth DogMan book, DogMan: Lord of the FLEAS, and has stopped seeing him as an enemy.

A new couch arrived at the police station for the Chief, who was very excited about it. However, after the couch was placed, Greg and Officer Knight sat on it. The Chief got angry, yelled at them, calling them "the worst Sheriffs ever!", and ordered them to leave. Then Sheriff Knight and Greg the Dog sadly left the police station. As they walked outside, Petey and his butler spied on them. The butler asked Petey if he was scared of Sheriff Knight and Greg, to which Petey replied no, and took him to his lab to explain why by showing the two's weaknesses. But then the butler pointed out that they could work together, so Petey planted a bomb near Officer Knight and Greg to get rid of them, and yelled "HELP! THERE'S A BOMB!" to get their attention, before running off. Then Sheriff Knight and Greg arrived on the scene and tried to stop the bomb by cutting a wire. Sheriff Knight tried to ask Greg which wire he should cut, but Greg answered incorrectly as he was colorblind, causing the bomb to explode. Sheriff Knight and Greg were then rushed to the town hospital, but it was too late for them. Doctors came in and revealed that Greg's body was dying, and Officer Knight's head was dying.

When all hope of survival seemed lost, Genie S, Lady came up with the idea of stitching Greg's head onto Officer's knight-like body. Everyone cheered and the second operator called her a genius. After the surgery, a new hero was finally born: Dog Man! After the surgery, the news of the surgery spreads like wildfire and there are articles on the news saying that Dog Man is the new best Sheriff in town. Unfortunately, Petey hears about the news and gets angry that he accidentally created the best Sheriff in the world, so he came up with the idea of killing DogMan. Unfortunately, Petey hears the news and becomes angry for accidentally creating the world's greatest Sheriff, so he comes up with the idea of killing Dogman once and for all. Dogman can't talk, he only makes noises like barking, growling or sounds like dogs, that's why he acts more to be able to show what he feels. Even though he doesn't speak, he understands what others say. It hurts him a lot when they call him a bad dog. He usually lowers his ears and is very depressed for the rest of the day. Being very playful and mischievous, he often gets into a lot of trouble in which he ends up being scolded by his boss. In some ways it makes him laugh, but sometimes it makes him sad at the words his boss uses.

Petey: They used to be enemies but after his redemption in Lord of the Fleas he started to accept him. Once in Who's Who of the Balls he licked him when he came to take Li'l Petey away. Also, Petey teaches Dogman how to act like a cat in Grime and Punishment as they now have a positive relationship. Petey has now moved into Dogman's house as a roommate after half of Mothering Heights where Petey's house gets crushed by the two evil sippy cups, they are basically rommies even though Petey has improved in certain points they still don't get along very well but they do their best to take care of Li'L Petey the best they can. Li'l Petey: They have a very strong relationship, Dogman adopted him for a while before Li'l Petey and Petey became a family, so he sees him as his adopted son who he takes care of with Petey. Boss: Every time he sees him, he struts around him. Although Dogman can be annoying, Boss is still a good friend of his, Boss doesn't admit it but he loves Dogman very much like a son. Sarah: In Dogman Unleashed, she helped him find Li'l Petey when he disappeared so they are good friends. Despite his differences with Petey, they both seek the best for Li'l Petey, regardless of his point of view.
