Bruce Wayne is a philanthropist, billionaire, and the corporate chairman of Wayne Enterprises. He secretly plays the role of Batman, the masked hero who battles the underworld and organized crime in Gotham City by fighting dangerous criminals who threaten the peace of his fellow citizens. Bruce swore at the grave of his deceased parents, who were killed in an armed robbery, to fight crime in all its forms. Billionaire philanthropist Thomas Wayne, his wife Martha and their 8-year-old son Bruce Wayne were leaving a movie theater one night when they headed toward Park Row. Suddenly, a gun-toting thug named Joe Chill approached them from the shadows to steal the pearl necklace Martha was wearing. With Bruce watching, Chill shot and killed Thomas Wayne in cold blood when he protected his wife and then Martha was also killed as she screamed for help. Bruce was severely traumatized by the death of his parents. He would never be the same again. After being raised by his wise and loyal butler Alfred Pennyworth, Bruce inherited his family's vast fortune as well as his father's company, Wayne Enterprises. One night, standing at his parents' graves, Bruce swore a solemn oath to them to fight crime in all its forms, taking justice into his own hands.

Despite financial security, happiness eluded Bruce. Bruce was comforted by Dr. Leslie Thompkins, who helped him grieve his parents and find purpose in life. At age fourteen, Bruce began a twelve-year journey around the world in search of experts in many fields of combat, training himself mentally and physically. Academically, he studied at Cambridge (England), the Sorbonne in France, and other famous European universities. A Frenchman named Henri Ducard taught him how to hunt and stalk a person, a ninja named Kirigi taught him stealth, an African bushman trained him in the art of hunting, and monks in Nepal taught him healing. Bruce returned to Gotham City, where he became a vigilante. But for all his finely honed skills, he knew something was missing. Bruce wanted criminals to be "very superstitious and cowardly," and in order to rid his city of evil, he had to become such a terrifying symbol that he could strike fear into the hearts of criminals. One night, in his father's study, a large bat flew through the window. Bruce saw this as an omen and remembered his fear of bats as a child. He knew then that this was to be his symbol - the Bat would help him strike terror into Gotham's underworld. Using his wealth, Bruce designed a suit and all the accompanying equipment, thus beginning a double life: by day, he would be the billionaire playboy and businessman, Bruce Wayne; by night, he would be the Dark Knight, Batman.

Batman, in most of his incarnations, is also very amorous, a dark and shadowy hero with a personal vendetta against criminals. Traumatized by the death of his parents, Batman has sworn to rid Gotham of the criminal elements that alienated his parents from him. Due to his personal trauma, Bruce is very paranoid and obsessive, and often makes it difficult for himself to trust anyone other than Alfred, the Robins, or Batgirl. Batman displays a deep aversion to firearms, partly due to the manner in which his parents died, being shot with one. Despite this, Batman has shown to have a great love for humanity, which was instilled in him by his parents. His father was a doctor, while his mother was a woman who led a crusade against child abuse. In fact, Batman's oath of vengeance is tempered by the higher ideal of justice. He refrains from killing, as he feels that he would do no better than the criminals he fights. He is also a very prominent member of the Justice League and the founder of the Outsiders. However, even though he would never go so far as to take a life, the most well-known aspect of Bruce's personality as Batman and the reason he is feared in the criminal world is a very particular one: Batman, while he does not actually kill anyone, is predisposed and determined to do harm; he can even resort to physical torture if necessary to terrorize his enemies and gain information. To protect his secret identity, Batman has constructed a false persona that he can use in his civilian life. To the world at large, Bruce Wayne is a self-centered, irresponsible playboy and philanthropist. Only his closest allies know that this attitude is just an act. Batman's main traits are summarized in physical prowess, deductive abilities and obsession.
