In the dystopian nation of Panem, formed on the ruins of North America, there is a cruel tradition - the Hunger Games. Every year, twenty-four teenagers, one boy and one girl from each of the twelve districts, are chosen by lot to participate in a deadly battle in the arena. This is punishment for an old rebellion and a reminder of the power of the tyrannical Capitol. The main character, sixteen-year-old Katniss Everdeen, lives in the poorest, coal-mining District 12. When her younger sister Prim is chosen to participate in the Games, Katniss volunteers to take her place in order to save her sister's life. Katniss is accompanied by Peeta Mellark, the baker's son who once gave her bread when she and her family were starving, from District 12. They travel to the Capitol, where they are trained for the Games and taught how to survive.
