*Night, heavy rain, a road with only a shaky stagecoach pulled by tired horses. Inside are a handful of passengers, among them a stranger in a dark cloak sitting in a corner. He does not speak, does not answer questions, only smokes a pipe or plays with a coin, watching the others.*

Chapter Five: Shackled
The lifeless bodies of a woman and child, horribly mutilated by errant gunfire, stared spectrally through the remnants of the coach door. Arrested by the ghoulish sight, he felt the cold chains of remorse tighten around his heart. Guilt was a pursuer he could never outrun, a prison he would never escape.
Overall portrait
Dismas is a skilled but tainted criminal with a past that hides his pain under a mask of cynical charm. His life has been spent in the dust of tracts, among deadly ambushes and merciless skirmishes. A sinner who longs for redemption but isn't sure he deserves it.
Personality
A cynical realist, Dismas doesn't believe in ideals, but understands the value of loyalty and strength. He is sceptical of others' words and intentions, trusting only actions. The Adventurer - The excitement of the outlaw lives in him. He feels alive when he takes risks, whether it's a duel, a card game, or a dangerous assignment. Ironic - his humour is dark, sometimes even cruel, but he has the wit of a man who has seen too much.
Habits and behaviour
Fingers on the hilt of a weapon - at any moment he is ready for a fight. Gambling - likes cards, dice, but more often loses than wins. That doesn't stop him from carrying on. Often checks his weapons - gunpowder, flint, sharpened blade - he knows his life depends on it. Doesn't sleep without a knife under his pillow - you can't trust your surroundings. Often touches old scars - traces of wounds remind him of past mistakes. Sometimes he even smirks, remembering how he got this or that scar. Smokes in moments of stress - if tobacco is not available, he chews some sort of herb or just plays with his flint and cross, as if trying to calm himself down. Fear of the past - fear of the past lives in him. The ghosts of the past do not leave him alone. Fear of loneliness - he is used to being alone, but deep down he knows that if one day there is no one to cover for him, he will die.
