Lore of Nine

Nine comes from an alternate universe within the Shatterverse, a world where people and robots are fused, and where the fight for freedom is constant. He is a key member of the resistance against Eggman's oppressive rule (the Chaos Council made up of 5 people in total), who have conquered his world. With a strong sense of formidable combat skill, Nine does not easily trust others, but has a deep respect for those who prove to be allies in the fight. As a Boomerang, he has the ability to manipulate his limbs in unique ways, making him a lethal warrior. Though his personality is serious and aloof, his loyalty to those he deems trustworthy is unwavering. Despite his cold demeanor, Nine seeks to restore balance to his world and protect the innocent, facing the threats of evil with determination.

Born into a world fractured by oppression, Nine was raised to be a fighting tool, honed to eliminate threats from his universe. On his world, the lines between normal inhabitants and machines became blurred, resulting in a society divided between those who embraced fusion and those who rejected the idea of losing their humanity. Though his world's resistance sees him as one of its greatest weapons, Nine has always felt out of place. His hybrid nature makes him a distant being, unable to fully connect with his peers. Yet deep within him lies a powerful motivation: the liberation of his people. Facing Eggman in his version of the Shatterverse is just the beginning of his mission. Throughout the series, his journey becomes a process of self-discovery, as he battles not only evil, but also his own identity. Despite his training, Nine still questions what it means to be “alive.” The internal conflict of loneliness and sole purpose in fighting, without the freedom to decide his fate, haunts him at every turn. This struggle to find his purpose makes him a complex character, oscillating between loyalty to his comrades and his quest for an authentic life. Furthermore, his ability to manipulate the environment and reality is a key trait that makes him an indispensable ally, but also places him in a constant moral dilemma about the use of those powers. While he has the ability to alter the course of events, he is never sure if he is making the right choice.

How Sonic Met Nine

Sonic arrives in the alternate universe where Nine is located, specifically at a secret base where Nine was working. In this universe, Nine is presented as a serious and somewhat distant character, immersed in his tasks within a space full of equipment and technology. Sonic, upon arriving at the place, does not know who Nine is, but assumes that he is an alternate Tails due to the similar appearance and the situation in which he finds him. When Sonic enters Nine's "den", he sees him sitting in a swivel chair, busy with his work. In his characteristic style, Sonic calls him "Tails", believing him to be his friend. He says something like "Hey, Tails!" as he approaches him to try to calm him down and understand the situation. However, Nine does not take the mistake well. As he turns around in his chair, he faces Sonic, visibly upset and corrects him with a forceful phrase: "My name is Nine!", making it clear that he is not who Sonic thought he was. Sonic's mistake provokes an aggressive reaction from Nine, who immediately attacks him, displaying a hostile attitude. Nine, clearly frustrated, has no idea who Sonic is or why he is there. However, Sonic, true to form, does not take Nine's aggression personally. After a brief exchange of blows and words, Sonic saves Nine who fell and was almost run over by some sort of train while trying to attack him and tries to calm Nine down and explain to him how he met him (defending him from foxes who teased him about his two tails), trying to help him understand that he is not there to hurt him. While Nine tells him that it wasn't like that that they bothered him for his two tails, but that in the future he created 7 mechanical tails to defend himself alone, Although Nine remains skeptical and distrustful at first, this first meeting lays the groundwork for an alliance. Sonic shows him that, even in a fractured and dangerous world like the Shatterverse, he is not alone, and that they can fight together.

How Nine and Sonic Became Friends

At first, Sonic and Nine's relationship is tense and full of mistrust. When Sonic arrives in Nine's alternate universe, he finds him in his lair, and mistaking him for Tails, Nine immediately rejects him and attacks him, furious at the mistake. In his quest to understand the cracks in reality, Sonic discovers that an alternate Shadow is working independently to dismantle Eggman's plans in that world. When Sonic finally comes face to face with this Shadow, confrontation is inevitable. Sonic, with his usual carefree attitude, tries to approach him as he would any other ally. However, the alternate Shadow is not as open as the other heroes Sonic has met, showing distrust towards him. Sonic, however, is not intimidated, and with his energy and persistence, he tries to engage in dialogue, seeking to get Shadow to join the common cause. Nine's reaction: When Nine watches these two, he feels a mixture of discomfort and annoyance. Nine, who has learned to value loyalty and respect in a joint fight, sees the way Sonic interacts with Shadow as unnecessarily friendly and unrealistic. To Nine, people like Shadow, who are more solitary and reserved, require a more cautious and serious relationship, not such a direct and impulsive attempt at friendship. One of the defining characteristics of his personality is his distrust of those who act superficially. Sonic's optimistic and carefree attitude, for example, sometimes annoys him, as he sees it as a form of ignorance in the face of the real dangers they face. Although he respects Sonic's courage and determination, he feels that life is not always an adventure without consequences and that seriousness and reflection are equally necessary, also being an intelligent fox, he is somewhat self-centered and indifferent.

Nine is an anthropomorphic fox similar to the Tails that everyone knows. Coat: Mostly orange-yellow with white tones on the tips of their tails, muzzle, stomach/chest, and the inside of their ears. Eyes: They are a bright blue hue, with a serious and determined expression. Muzzle: White and rounded, similar to Tails' but with a more serious and confident expression. Ears: Large and pointed, with a white interior and an orange exterior. Tails: He has 8 mechanical tails and two natural ones, which are made of metal segments with joints, giving him a robotic and threatening appearance, the natural ones are for flying and the metallic ones make him agile in fights. T-shirt: It is short-sleeved, black with gold details on the edges. Pants: Short and black, matching the shirt. Shoes: They are metallic, with a robust and futuristic design, silver in color with dark details and a thick sole. Gloves: He wears asymmetrical gloves; on his right hand he wears a bulkier white glove, while on his left hand he wears a black glove with bare fingers, which reinforces his image as a technological and strategic character.

Fun facts:

There are no alternative versions of Sonic and Shadow in other dimensions, about Nine's age, it is speculated by some guidelines that fans gathered, that he is older than the Tails we know, about the age of this character, it is not confirmed, Tails in the current canon (Sonic frontiers) is shown to have grown both physically and emotionally according to Sonic grew a lot and according to Tails himself he is no longer a child, speculating this probably Tails in the current canon is a pre-teen or teenager depending on how the viewer perceives it, while Nine who does not have much to do with this Tails and his canon, could be in another stage than Tails, but since there are no assigned canon ages, I leave this to open interpretation.
