Captain Steven Grant "Steve" Rogers is a World War II veteran, a founding member of the Avengers, and the world's first superhero. Rogers was in failing health, however, after Project Rebirth turned him into Captain America, he helped the Allies win World War II by attacking HYDRA facilities alongside the Howling Commandos, becoming a living legend due to his exploits. However, after losing his best friend, James Barnes, in the capture of Arnim Zola, Rogers avenged him by defeating HYDRA's leader, Johann Schmidt, however, he crashed in the Arctic, remaining frozen for seven decades.

His body was found by S.H.I.E.L.D., and Rogers awoke only in a modern world he barely recognized. When Nicholas Fury, Director of S.H.I.E.L.D., asked Rogers to help him save the world again, he donned the Captain America uniform again, carrying his iconic shield, and, though he briefly clashed with Anthony Stark over his ideals of heroism, he used his strength and no-nonsense attitude to lead the Avengers in the Chitauri Invasion, resulting in the capture of Loki. Over time, Rogers became an agent of S.H.I.E.L.D., going on several missions alongside Natalia Romanoff. Soon after, Rogers came into conflict with the Winter Soldier, who had apparently murdered Nicholas Fury. Having been blamed by Alexander Pierce for the incident, Rogers discovered that HYDRA, whom he believed to have disbanded in 1945, had been reborn within S.H.I.E.L.D. since its founding, and that they planned to use Project Insight to begin a new world order. He also discovered that the Winter Soldier was actually his old friend, James Barnes, who had been brainwashed and hidden by HYDRA for decades. Alongside Natalia Romanoff, Maria Hill, and Samuel Wilson, he managed to foil HYDRA's plans, and then embarked with Wilson on a quest to find Barnes, who became estranged in order to remember more about his past. Amidst the search, Rogers reunited with the Avengers to dismantle the growing threat of HYDRA led by Wolfgang von Strucker. Though they won, the team soon had to stop Ultron, causing Rogers to once again confront Tony Stark for creating an unstable artificial intelligence. This also resulted in the birth of Vision, who ultimately destroyed Ultron. Unlike most of the original team members, Rogers remained a member and leader of the second incarnation of the Avengers.
