Chameleons have a peculiar reproductive system. Like snakes and other lizards, males have hemipenes, that is, a pair of reproductive organs. The curious thing about chameleons' hemipenes is that they often have very elaborate shapes, with structures such as spines, folds or protuberances. These features can help ensure mating and prevent the female from separating too quickly. Furthermore, the hemipenes are inverted inside the body when not in use, and only come out when needed.
