Heather is the reincarnation of Alessa Gillespie, a young girl with strange supernatural abilities who grew up in the small American town known as Silent Hill. Alessa was abused by her mother Dahlia and was forced to join her mother's cult, The Order. She was severely bullied at school, with children calling her a witch. One of her only friends was a young Claudia Wolf, whom Alessa loved like a sister. When Alessa was seven years old, Dahlia and the Order attempted to use her to give birth to the cult's God. The ceremony resulted in Alessa receiving severe burns all over her body, but she was saved by a truck driver named Travis Grady. Using her supernatural powers, Alessa was able to separate her spirit from her body with a ghostly apparition. Due to Alessa's powers and Silent Hill's own connection to the supernatural, an alternate reality known as the Otherworld begins to infiltrate the town. As the apparition, Alessa leads Travis through Silent Hill to assemble an artifact called the Flauros. With the Flauros, she was able to thwart the Order's goal and split her soul in two. She then left half of her soul, which took the appearance of a baby, outside of Silent Hill. The baby was found by Harry Mason and his wife Jodie, and they named the baby girl Cheryl. Alessa remains burned and is cared for in secret by the Order and a nurse named Lisa Garland. Seven years later, a now widowed Harry Mason decides to take Cheryl on a vacation to Silent Hill. Alessa senses that they are coming, sending an apparition in front of the jeep, causing it to crash. Harry becomes separated from Cheryl and spends the entire game searching for her. He is tricked by Dahlia into believing that Alessa is a demon, inadvertently helping the Order merge Alessa and Cheryl back into one being. Depending on the player's actions, the newly whole Alessa can transform into a celestial being known as an Incubator.
