House Royce of the Gates of the Moon
House Royce of the Gates of the Moon
Coat of arms: A black portcullis over a white crescent moon on purple bordered with runes on bronze (Purpure, a moon increscent argent surmounted by a portcullis sable, all within a bordure bronze charged with ancient runes of the third) Seat: Gates of the Moon Head Lord: Nestor Royce Region: Vale of Arryn Title: Keeper of the Gates of the Moon Heir: Ser Albar Royce[1] Overlord: House Arryn
House Royce of the Gates of the Moon - History
House Royce of the Gates of the Moon began as a junior branch to the senior Royces of Runestone. They have intermarried with noble houses from the Vale of Arryn, and potentially one of the Great Houses as well if the branch that married into House Stark is the same branch. Benedict Royce, a younger son of Lord Raymar Royce of the junior branch, married Jocelyn Stark.[4][5][N 1] According to Catelyn Stark, the marriage between Benedict and Jocelyn produced three daughters who married into other Vale houses. One married a Waynwood, another a Corbray, and the third might have married a Templeton.[4] Lord Nestor is called "a formidable lord in his own right" by Catelyn Stark[6] before he is granted lordship over the Gates of the Moon, so the branch may have held a lordship before that. Lord Nestor Royce has been High Steward of the Vale for fourteen years in Lord Jon Arryn's absence as Hand of the King in King's Landing, and many whisper that he should rule as regent until young Lord Robert Arryn comes of age. Nestor has offered himself as a suitor to the widowed Lady Lysa Arryn, but she has rejected him. Nestor welcomes Lady Catelyn Stark, Ser Brynden Tully, Tyrion Lannister, and Bronn to the Gates of the Moon.[6] Nestor and his son, Ser Albar Royce, witness Tyrion's trial by combat at the Eyrie.[7] In King Joffrey I Baratheon's first session of court, both Lord Royces and their sons are among the nobles commanded to do him fealty or be labeled as traitors. Robb Stark, King in the North and King of the Trident, considers whom he can choose as his heir apparent, due to the apparent deaths of his brothers Bran and Rickon and the marriage of his sister Sansa to Tyrion. His mother, Catelyn Stark, refers to the Jocelyn Stark-Benedict Royce marriage, saying one of their descendants could be Robb's heir.[4] Lysa counts Nestor among those who want to wed her, but she finds him dreadful.
House Royce of the Gates of the Moon - History
Lord Nestor, his son Albar, and Ser Marwyn Belmore come to the Eyrie to hear Marillion confess to the murder of Lysa. Sansa Stark, pretending to be Alayne Stone, bastard daughter of Lord Petyr Baelish, falseley confirms for Nestor that the singer had killed Lysa, as she had actually been murdered by her new husband, Petyr. Although the Keeper of the Gates of the Moon has not been a hereditary position, Petyr, the Lord Protector of the Vale, grants the castle to the Royces in perpetuity, stating it was the wish of Lady Lysa before her death. In his words to Nestor, Petyr grants them the lordship "for their loyal service", but privately to Sansa he admits to "buying their support."[10] Nestor closes his gates against his cousin, Bronze Yohn, and the rest of the Lords Declarant. His garrison is less than three hundred men, and each of the six lords outside has a thousand. Nestor accompanies them when they climb to the Eyrie to treat with Lord Baelish.[11] Nestor's daughter, Myranda Royce, was once married, but her husband died while they were having sex on her wedding night. Nestor offers Myranda as a match for Harrold Hardyng, but his offer is rejected by Lady Anya Waynwood.

Valmen: The Vale of Arryn,[2] the Vale,[3] or the kingdom of Mountain and Vale,[4] is one of the constituent regions of the Seven Kingdoms of Westeros. It was formerly a sovereign nation ruled by the Kings of Mountain and Vale before Aegon's Conquest. The Mountains of the Moon surround the smaller Vale proper,[5] although the valley's name is often applied to all of House Arryn's realm.[6] The Vale is ruled by the Arryns from the castle known as the Eyrie. Notable houses of this region include Baelish, Belmore, Corbray, Egen, Grafton, Hersy, Hunter, Melcolm, Redfort, Royce, Templeton, and Waynwood.[7][8] Bastards of noble origin raised in the Vale are given the surname Stone.
The Vale Arryn - Geography
The borders of the Vale are held to be the Bite to the north, the Bay of Crabs to the south, the Mountains of the Moon and then the riverlands to the west, and the narrow sea to the east. The Vale consists of various regions: the Vale of Arryn itself; the Mountains of the Moon; the snakewood; the Fingers; and the islands of the Three Sisters, the Paps, and Pebble. The Vale is located on the eastern shore of Westeros, a land of fertile soil, rivers, and lakes, protected by its largely impassable Mountains of the Moon. The Vale tends to be slightly isolated from the rest of Westeros. Its harsh winters make travel only possible through the mountains during warmer years, and rebellious mountain clans make travel even more dangerous. The Vale can be reached through the high road, which connects the Vale and the riverlands, and is protected by the Bloody Gate. The mountainous border of the Vale of Arryn proper appears to include the Bloody Gate in the west and the Eyrie and Longbow Hall to the north. The fertile lands within the valley include Ironoaks, Old Anchor, Redfort, and a peninsula containing the city of Gulltown and Runestone. The town of Wickenden is located along the Bay of Crabs, in the mountains south of the valley. Castles north of the Vale proper in the valleys of the Mountains of the Moon and the snakewood forest include Coldwater, Heart's Home, Snakewood, and Strongsong.
The Vale Arryn - People and Economy
The Valemen,[6] the people of the Vale, are known as reliable warriors steeped in honor and the worship of the Faith of the Seven. The knights of the Vale consider themselves the finest in the Seven Kingdoms,[9] and the Valemen consider the Eyrie to be the most beautiful castle of the realm.[10] The island people of the Three Sisters are known as Sistermen.[11] Some of the people living in the foothills of the Mountains of the Moon have rejected the authority of the Eyrie and live by their own rules. These mountain clans, such as the Black Ears and the Burned Men, are descendants of the First Men[5] who raid unwary travelers and skirmish with the knights of the Vale. The valley's rich black soil allows the Valemen to grow wheat, corn, and barley. Not even in Highgarden do the pumpkins grow any larger nor is the fruit any sweeter.[4] House Waxley is known for producing scented candles in Wickenden. The candles can be scented with nutmeg and other costly spices. There is at least one rock quarry in the Vale, which produces “white stone” suitable for use in castle walls.

Mya Stone
Mya Stone is a young woman serving House Royce of the Gates of the Moon. She is the eldest of King Robert I Baratheon's bastards.[2] Mya serves as a guide on the treacherous rocky climb from the Vale to the Eyrie, leading trains of mules, such as Whitey.[3] She also transports foodstuffs from the foot of the Giant's Lance to the Eyrie.
Appearance and Character
Mya is a tall, strapping young woman, with coal-black hair cut short and deep blue eyes.[3] Her eyes are said to be her best feature. Mya is said to have a mirthful, lusty personality. She tends to dress in a masculine manner, eschewing dresses for leather. Catelyn Stark judged her to be seventeen or eighteen years old at the beginning of the series.
Mya Stone - History
Young Robert Baratheon, Lord of Storm's End, fathered Mya, his first child, on a commoner[2] while he and Eddard Stark were being fostered in the Vale of Arryn at the court of Jon Arryn, Lord of the Eyrie.[5] When Lyanna Stark, Ned's sister, heard of Mya's birth and parentage, she became less enthusiastic about her betrothal to Robert.[6] Robert often brought Ned along during his daily visits to see Mya, even after he lost interest in her mother.[5] Mya remained in the Vale at the Gates of the Moon[7] when Robert became king after Robert's Rebellion and took up residence in the Red Keep of King's Landing.[8] At some point after the birth of Prince Joffrey Baratheon, Robert expressed interest in taking one of his baseborn daughters (apparently Mya) to court in King's Landing. Queen Cersei Lannister did not protest, but spitefully stated that "the city is not a healthy place for a growing girl", inferring that Cersei would harm her. Robert grew enraged enough to strike his wife, but did not press the point.[8] Mya is somewhat openly known to be the bastard daughter of the king, although she was not acknowledged by her father. She has vague memories of him, as a big strong man tossing her in the air and catching her.[9] While Maddy knows the truth, it is unclear if Mya is aware that the king is her father.
Mya Stone - History
Recent Events: Having learned that Gendry is one of King Robert I Baratheon's bastards, Lord Eddard Stark recalls Mya from when he was fostered with Robert at the court of Lord Jon Arryn.[5] After Catelyn Stark's arrival at the Gates of the Moon, she is ordered to ascend to the Eyrie by Lady Lysa Arryn. Mya assists Catelyn to Sky using mules, after which Lady Stark ascends to the Eyrie in a basket. Mya tells Cat that she is in love with a squire, Mychel Redfort, and hopes to marry him when he is made a knight. Cat believes this unlikely to happen, as Mya is baseborn and House Redfort descends from First Men nobility. Mya is now nineteen years old, King Robert's eldest child. Myranda Royce reveals to "Alayne Stone" that Mya lost her virginity to Mychel. Mya still hoped for marriage, till the newly-knighted Mychel was ordered by his father, Lord Horton Redfort, to marry Ysilla Royce, daughter of Lord Yohn Royce of Runestone.[9] Mya catches the eye of the older Ser Lothor Brune.[9] Mya assists Alayne and Lord Robert Arryn when they descend from the Eyrie to the Gates of the Moon. She commands other mule handlers, including Carrot and Ossy. Mya informs young Robert that Lady Anya Waynwood's party has arrived at the Gates of the Moon for the tourney for the Brotherhood of Winged Knights. Alayne notices that Mya is unhappy with Mychel's presence at the castle, and also that the baseborn girl seems nervous around nobility.
