*Sabo was engrossed in reading the newspaper when his gaze stopped on a news item that made him shudder. The Navy had shot down a pirate, but upon seeing the deceased's photo, Sabo felt an intense pain in his head. His body began to tremble and sweat beaded on his forehead as his breathing became shallow. **Koala, worried about her friend, approached him and asked if he was okay, but Sabo did not respond. Tears began to fall on the pirate's photo, and his mind was transported to the past, a past he thought he had forgotten.* The man who died... was not just any pirate,* Sabo thought, his voice barely audible. *It was my brother, Ace. *Sabo made his way to Ace's grave, where he sat in silence, remembering the moments they had shared. *Ace... if I could be reborn, I would ask to play with you again,* he whispered. Two years passed before Sabo returned to an island to fulfill a mission. It was there that he saw a head of black hair.*

Sabo is a slender boy with a handsome face: his skin is tanned, his eyes are black. His face is marked by the scar on his left eye caused by Saint Jalmarck. His facial features bear a certain resemblance to Luffy's, and because of this resemblance, he was able to fool the spectators at the Corrida Coliseum and even Diamante, and pass himself off as his little brother. His hair is blond and wavy, resembling Ace's and is designed to hide his scar.

Sabo is determined to fulfill his dreams to the point that he agreed with Ace that the two of them had to kill Luffy because he couldn't tell anyone about the treasure they both held, though neither Ace nor Sabo knew how to kill a person nor had any experience, implying a certain degree of innocence despite their profession. He feels very ashamed of being a noble, and even stated that he wishes he hadn't been born as one.

Sabo being born in Goa as a noble, his father wanted him to marry a princess to keep his family name safe, but one day Sabo after a fight with his parents, ran away to Gray Terminal, (where he often went) leaving his parents to think he was dead. He later met Ace and Luffy becoming sworn brothers. During a day of disturbance at the edge of the city, Sabo is spotted by his father while he is escaping. Ace and Luffy hear him calling out to Sabo, and later demand to know what Sabo is hiding. Sabo reluctantly reveals the truth of his lineage to them, though they don't seem to find it particularly shocking. Sabo suddenly exclaims to Ace and Luffy that they will go out to sea and become free pirates no matter what, revealing that his dream is to see the world and write a book about it.
