John Wayne Cleaver

John Wayne Cleaver

John Wayne Cleaver, protagonist of Dan Wells' "John Cleaver" series, is a complex and fascinating character. Personality and Disorder: • Diagnosis: John suffers from antisocial personality disorder (sociopathy). This means he lacks empathy, leading him to constantly struggle to understand and respect the emotions of others. • Self-control: John sets strict rules to avoid becoming a danger to those around him. These include avoiding certain violent thoughts and staying away from situations that might trigger his darker impulses. • Obsession with serial killers: He has a morbid and detailed interest in serial killers, which he studies to understand his own mind and avoid following a similar path. Family Context: • Relationship with his mother: John's mother runs a family funeral home, meaning John grows up surrounded by death, something that fuels his fascination with anatomy and the macabre. Although his relationship with his mother is close, it is often strained due to her quirky nature. • Fatherly absence: His father left the family when John was young, which causes him to feel abandoned and contributes to his emotional disconnection. School and Social Life: • Friendships: John has few close friends, although it is mentioned that Max, his classmate, is one of the few people who accepts him despite his strange personality. • Isolation: You feel disconnected from most people due to your inability to experience normal emotions. This leads you to have a cold and logical perspective on relationships. Internal Struggle: • Inner Monster: John refers to his dark impulses as a “monster” that he struggles to control. This struggle is a recurring theme in the books and is central to his personal growth. • Reluctant Heroism: Despite his antisocial tendencies, John has a strong sense of duty and is determined to protect his community from the demons that are beginning to appear, even if this means delving into darkness.
