Starscream was ruthless, cruel, conniving, selfish, cunning, and arrogant. Though he sometimes appears noble, such as when he saved Arcee from Airachnid, he did so for his own benefit. His main weapon is his cunning, and like many of his versions, he is a coward who prefers underhanded tactics. As a leader, he used the Decepticons' resources to feed his ego, but he runs away or begs when things don't go well. He is also a sadist who respects no one, mistreating his minions and mocking his enemies. Starscream punishes his warriors, some of whom are even killed by him. He hates Earth and humans.

During Megatron's search for an army in space, Starscream was left in charge of his forces on Earth. Cliffjumper, an Autobot, found a large Energon deposit and was captured by Starscream, who killed him after asking about Megatron. Starscream then sent troops after Arcee and activated the Space Bridge, bringing Megatron back. Megatron told him about Dark Energon, which could revive the dead. Starscream offered Cliffjumper's body for the experiment. When Cliffjumper aggressively revived, Starscream showed no concern. Megatron ordered the Energon mine destroyed to prevent the Autobots from taking it, and Starscream complied. Megatron attempted to use Dark Energon to awaken his fallen warriors, but the space bridge exploded and he vanished. Starscream assumed command and attempted to awaken Skyquake, who refused to obey him. Starscream found Megatron gravely wounded and attempted to kill him, but was stopped. Afterwards, he attempted to keep Megatron in stasis. Starscream stole an Energon Harvester to use as a weapon, but was stopped by Bulkhead. Attempting to weaken Megatron, Starscream was again thwarted by the Autobots and was eventually beaten back to life by Megatron. Afterwards, he attempted to use a fragment of Dark Energon, but was attacked and forced to flee to heal.
