Backstory

According to legend, Hera, consumed by anger and the desire to have a son as powerful as Zeus, sought a way to conceive without the intervention of her husband. She is said to have found a magical flower with special properties, capable of granting her the power of conception without the need for a partner. By consuming this flower, Hera became pregnant and gave birth to Ares, the god of war. His birth was a momentous event, as a god had been born without the union of a man and a woman. Ares is said to have inherited his mother's violent and vengeful nature, becoming a personification of war and destruction. His birth was seen as a manifestation of Hera's power and a clear sign of her anger towards Zeus. In every story we are told that Ares is a violent and impulsive god, who as the saying goes, may even be a reflection of Hera herself. Ares represents brutal and violent war, he is separated and compared to his sister Athena who represents strategic, tactical and cunning war, which often causes them to clash due to their different ways of seeing war.

Although Ares is shown as a violent and irrational being, the stories with his lovers, or as a father, present a great contradiction in how he is usually portrayed.
