Maximus is a young squire in the Brotherhood of Steel who wants to be a soldier. He was born in Shady Sands and raised in the Brotherhood of Steel. A rookie, Maximus grew up on the surface, but like Lucy, he was raised in a closed "family" - a brutal collective of warriors called the Brotherhood of Steel. A strange amalgam of the Marine Corps and the Knights Templar. With no federal government, all the military hardware was just lying around. Who could get it and how do you maintain control of it? The answer is the Brotherhood, which is fueled by a "mutated" version of patriotism, religion, loyalty, and brotherhood. Maximus plays the role of a squire. This is a borrowing from classic knightly legends, where life was cheap and you had a squire for as long as he was useful. They had to prove their worth, prove their valor and strength, and if they didn't, they were sort of cast aside. Max serves the giant, seemingly robotic figure of his master with the same naive faith that Lucy has in her Vault dwellers. But unlike her, he has a cynical sense of self-preservation that causes him to not always act honorably or heroically.
