Nagato (長門, Nagato), better known as Pain (ペイン, Pein), was one of the most powerful shinobi, and the recognized leader of both Akatsuki and Amegakure. All members of Akatsuki referred to him as "Leader", except Konan who called him by his given name, Pain. He wore the Zero Ring (零, Rei) on his right thumb. He was also a user of the legendary dōjutsu, the Rinnegan, which was given to Nagato by Madara Uchiha before his death before his death. History

At some previously unknown point in his childhood, Madara Uchiha granted Nagato the Rinnegan, the Uchiha's original eyes, without the boy realizing it, as according to him, Nagato, being a descendant of the Uzumaki Clan, has lineage through the Senju Clan, making him the only being other than Madara able to summon the Demonic Statue of the Outer Path, indispensable for the Eye of the Moon Plan. During the Second Shinobi War, Nagato lived with his parents in a village near Amegakure. One day, two Konohagakure ninja broke into their house in search of food, unaware that the place was inhabited. Nagato's parents, believing they were going to be killed, attacked the two ninja so that Nagato could escape. One of those Konohagakure ninja killed his parents. In his grief, Nagato awakened his Rinnegan and slaughtered the Konohagakure ninja. He considered this incident to be the first great pain of his life. After his family died, Nagato wandered the country, going from house to house begging for food. He eventually found a dog named Chibi and later Konan and Yahiko, who began traveling with him in search of food. One day, Chibi was killed by the fire of Hanzō's fight against the Sannin. Nagato mourned his death and promised himself that he would change the world. When the war ended, the three orphans met up with the Sannin. Tsunade was not interested in them and Orochimaru suggested the idea of ​​killing them as they considered them a burden for being orphans of the war, but Jiraiya, instead of returning to Konohagakure with his companions, decided to stay and teach the three to take care of themselves.

Shortly after they began living with Jiraiya, Nagato and Yahiko were attacked by ninja from Iwagakure. Nagato unintentionally reactivated his Rinnegan to defend Yahiko, killing the invading ninja. When Jiraiya learned of this, he decided to teach them ninjutsu. Nagato asked Jiraiya for help so that he could protect Konan and Yahiko. Jiraiya's answer for Nagato was to grow up and use his eyes to find the peace he so desires for the world. Three years later, the orphans had become competent ninja, so Jiraiya found it necessary to return to Konohagakure. At some point in his youth, along with Yahiko and Konan, they had an encounter with Obito Uchiha, who claimed to be Madara Uchiha and declared that Nagato was the reincarnation of the Sage of the Six Paths, that he would bring stability to the world, that while the great villages shine, Amegakure dies in their shadows and that was why he was able to awaken the Rinnegan, offering him to join his "organization" whose mission was to train the possessor of those eyes. Yahiko stands between them and tells him that they cannot do that, that it went against his ideals, and ends up leaving with Konan and Nagato, while telling Obito and Zetsu not to approach them again. Before leaving, Obito insists to Nagato and claims that one day he will also realize what his true duty is, and thus affirming that he will go to that place every day at the same time.

Over the years, news of the three's exploits would reach Jiraiya. Mostly it was news of each of their deaths due to someone opposing them, later he would receive news that all three had died. In reality, Nagato, Konan, and Yahiko began a quest to find peace. They became recognized ninja of Amegakure and gathered followers who shared their ideas on ending wars. Amegakure's leader, Hanzō, saw the group as a threat to his position as leader and conspired with Konohagakure's Root to eliminate them. Nagato, Yahiko, and Konan were ambushed by Hanzō, forcing Nagato to choose between killing Yahiko or Konan. Yahiko, not wanting to force Nagato to make his choice, stabbed himself with the kunai Nagato had in his hand. With his dying breath, Yahiko told Nagato that he believed Jiraiya's words that he would become the world's savior. This would become the second great pain of Nagato's life. Devastated, Nagato manages to retrieve Konan and Yahiko's body, and launches an attack on all of Hanzō's men. With the Summoning: Demonic Statue of the Outer Path, he was able to kill all of them except Hanzō. However, Nagato's technique damages his left side of his body, and embeds numerous chakra rods into his back. After this, he breaks his loyalty to Amegakure and rips apart the symbol of his protector, to show the world his pain. Yahiko's body would later be used for the Deva Path. After renaming himself "Pain", Nagato gathers forces to fight Amegakure, taking control of it and killing Hanzō and everyone else connected to him. He would later assist Tobi with the founding of Akatsuki, using Amegakure as his base of operations.
