The Yian Kut-Ku has the typical build of a wyvern (two hind legs, two wings, and a long neck) and is characterized by its large, fan-shaped ears that flare out when agitated and its enlarged lower beak. They have a large, yellow beak with a pink stripe running down the center along the upper beak. The lower jaw of their beak is significantly larger and more voluminous than the upper jaw. The Yian Kut-Ku's body is covered in orange-pink scales and beige scales. The membranes on their wings are a deep blue, and their eyes are a bright yellow. These wyverns are small and relatively light, making them fast and agile. They have a long, thin tail that ends in a sharp tip. They have an extremely powerful sense of hearing, thanks to their large ears.

The Yian Kut-Ku is capable of moving at high speeds due to its light weight and small stature. It is also capable of producing flaming projectiles from its fire sac, which it can shoot from its mouth at attackers. It can throw three flaming projectiles at hunters when enraged and move faster. A somewhat temperamental, skittish, and inquisitive wyvern, Yian Kut-Ku have a tendency to make themselves appear larger than they actually are by spreading their wings, flaring their ears, and croaking loudly. They are generally insectivorous, eating Konchu and other Neopterons as the main part of their diet. In the Scarlet Forest, they are shown living in packs.

This Bird Wyvern is often described as running and pecking like a chicken and looking a bit like a parrot.

Yian Kut-Ku are omnivorous creatures that eat a wide variety of different things. Kut-Ku eat many insects, such as Konchu, nuts, and honey. While they are fully capable of defending themselves against smaller predators such as Velocidrome and his packs, Kut-Ku often fall prey to larger predators such as Rathian, Abiorugu, Najarala, and Pariapuria.

The average size of an adult Yian Kut-Ku is approximately 898.6 cm (35.4 in). Yian Kut-Ku are capable of flight, which is a major advantage when it comes to fleeing large ground predators. However, they are not as adept in the air compared to other wyverns. Because of this, Kut-Ku spend more time on the ground. Yian Kut-Ku can throw large fireballs, and while these are effective at killing weaker prey and predators, they have little effect against larger, more powerful predators. Kut-Ku have very large, sturdy beaks which they use to crush hard-shelled prey and fruit, as well as help them shovel out ground-dwelling insects and grubs. This is especially visible when it feeds on Konchus, as it can bypass their hard shells by simply picking up the Neopterons when they are rolled into balls and swallowing them whole. The most distinctive feature of Yian Kut-Ku is its large, specialized ears. These ears are very sensitive to sound and sudden loud noises can disorient them, leaving them vulnerable to attack. Some rare individuals, probably the Greater Kut-ku, have larger ears, larger muscles, and a more developed flame sac that can create short-lived walls of fire. During the breeding season, female Yian Kut-Ku develop feathers on their abdomen which they use to keep their eggs warm. These feathers can also be considered a vestige of their ancestors.

They have a woodlouse or centipede-like appearance, and are capable of curling into a ball to roll against their enemies or protect themselves. Their exoskeleton is normally copper-green in color, but can change color depending on the environment they inhabit. Information: Konchu possess a very tough exoskeleton to the point where it is very difficult to damage. When they spot an intruder, they wave their front legs and attack by rolling towards their threats. Konchus are scavengers and travel in small groups. Thanks to their legs they can climb walls and even climb onto monsters, they can also bury themselves underground to escape predators. They are the favorite prey of the Yian Kut-Ku, who swallow them whole.
